Neighbourhood Renewal in Limavady

Home » Living » Neighbourhood Renewal

In June 2003, the Department for Social Development launched a Neighbourhood Renewal Strategy. The strategy targets those communities throughout Northern Ireland which suffer from the highest levels of deprivation.

Neighbourhood Renewal is a programme that involves local key partners in the statutory, voluntary and community sector working together to reduce the gap between disadvantaged communities and the rest of society.

The Neighbourhood Renewal area in Limavady is the sixth most deprived area in Northern Ireland according to the NISRA statistics.

This area includes the Hospital Lane estate, the Glens estate, Roe Mill Road, Kennaght Terrance, Josephine Avenue and Greystone Road, a total of 2840 residents.  There are two community groups within the Neighbourhood Renewal Area, The Glens Community Association situated at Glenlea Park and Roe Valley Residents Association situated at Keady Way.  They can be contacted on the following numbers:

The Glens Community Association – 028 777 29046

Roe Valley Residents Association – 028 777 69996

Consultation took place in 2006 with local residents, to decide on priorities for change in the area. From this consultation a three year Action Plan was developed.  This has subsequently been updated and can be accessed from the documents box on the right hand side of this page. This Action Plan is split up into four sections, Community Renewal, Social Renewal, Physical Renewal and Economic Renewal. Current Projects:

At present there are three projects delivering services that are funded by DSD Neighbourhood Renewal.  Roe Valley Residents Association have a part time Project Co-ordinator, LCDI a full time NR Advice Officer, and the Neighbourhood Renewal Officer would be based within Limavady Borough Council.  All of these projects deliver services that are vital to the area and cover specific actions within the Limavady Action Plan.

Previous Projects:

Neighbourhood Renewal in Limavady has in the past year delivered projects under the four subs sections.  Under Economic Renewal the Partnership supported a Young Entrepreneurs Programme based within St Mary’s High School.  Here children from both St Mary’s and the High School who live within the Neighbourhood Renewal area came together to developed a Young Entrepreneurs Booklet on what is needed to be an entrepreneur.

We have also delivered a Health Promotion Workshop organised by the NR Health Co-ordinator.  This workshop consisted of a mixture of facilitators and health workers offering advice and support on topics such as heart disease, diabetes, smoking censation, holistic therapies, healthy foods and much more.
