Limavady Borough Council provides a refuse and recycling service to all 11,782 households.  The Council is dedicated to meeting the national recycling targets and continues to search for new innovative ways of improving and increasing recycling activities throughout the borough.  Limavady Borough Council introduced their blue bin kerbside recycling service to each household in 2003 and has currently achieved a recycling rate of 35%.

To tackle the issue of waste management in Northern Ireland, it was decided that a regional approach would prove more beneficial to each of the twenty six councils.  The three regional groups are:  ARC21 which covers the eastern area of the province, SWAMP covers the southern area and The North West Region Waste Management Group (NWRWMG).  NWRWMG MapNWRWMG has seven members of which Limavady Borough Council is one.  The other members include; Coleraine Borough Council, Ballymoney Borough Council, Moyle District Council, Magherfelt Borough Council, Strabane District Council, and Derry City Council.

NWRWMG have produced the North West Waste Management Plan which has changed the way in which local authorities collect, process and dispose of their waste.  They continue to monitor, review and develop the plan to ensure it enables its members to meet their statutory requirements and achieve the EU and National recycling targets.

Northern Ireland targets for waste management are:

  • To recover 25% of household waste by 2005
  • To recover 40% of household waste by 2010
  • To divert 25% of biodegradable waste from landfill by 2010
  • To divert 50% of biodegradable waste from landfill by 2013
  • To divert 65% of biodegradable waste from landfill by 2020
