Home composterThe container is 330 litre in size, has easy front access with a lift top lid. The cost is £15 with no delivery cost. Contact Limavady council directly or use this website to purchase a home composter. They can be placed in your garden and used to compost material such as garden and kitchen waste.  If used properly it will produce a dark and nutrient rich compost which can be used in the garden.

Approximately 25% of our household waste is compostable.  Therefore by composting the correct waste material at home you can help reduce the amount of waste currently being disposed off to landfill.  Please contact Technical Services on (028) 7776 0305 to enquire further about home composting.

Useful Tips

  • Place your compost bin on either soil or grass but not concrete
  • Keep your compost healthy by adding materials that are high in nitrogen, contain carbon (such as dried leaves or shredded newspapers) and contain both carbon and nitrogen (such as kitchen scraps, pea straw and green garden prunings)
  • Build your compost in thin layers and alternate kitchen waste and garden waste layers and use a diversity of materials
  • Make sure your compost is moist but not wet, warm and placed in a sunny spot and is easily accessible
  • Keep your compost aerated! If you are composting with a tumbling composter, make sure you turn it whenever you add new materials. If you are composting with a pile, or in a static (non-tumbling) compost bin, be sure to mix up the contents so that the pile gets oxygen and can break down effectively
  • Hot (fast) compost takes 3-6 months and you need to turn the compost every day. Cold (slow) compost takes 6-12 months and you need to keep adding waste, especially kitchen scraps

Why Compost?

  • You reduce the amount of waste going into your refuse bin and then to landfill
  • You don't have to incur the cost of purchasing compost from a garden centre
  • You can improve the quality of the soil in your garden by spreading the home-made compost over the soil once it is ready
  • You will get longer lasting, brighter blooms from compost enriched soil
  • You will prevent the digging up of declining peat bogs
