Community Glass Recycling

Community Glass RecyclingRecycling your glass bottles and jars will soon be easier to do thanks to a new and unique community recycling initiative.  Limavady Borough Council, in partnership with the ARENA Network and The Greenshed Project, has started to install new glass recycling points throughout the borough.  Each recycling point will provide a facility for recycling green, clear and brown glass as well as a textile recycling bank for old clothes.

The UK throws away over 1.4 million tonnes of glass each year.  However, glass is one hundred percent recyclable and by recycling bottles and jars we can considerably reduce the amount of energy we use.  The energy saved by recycling one glass bottle will:

•           power a 100Watt light bulb for almost an hour

•           power a computer for 25 minutes

•           power a colour TV for 20 minutes

•           power a washing machine for 10 minutes.

And as the average home in the UK uses on average 330 glass bottles and jars annually, that is a lot of energy that can be saved.

The Greenshed Project has agreed to service and maintain the recycling points on a regular basis.  Kieran Corr, Manager of the Greenshed states that by, “supporting and using the glass recycling points you are not only helping to improve our environment but also helping to create local jobs for local people.”
