Limavady Borough Council has launched a “Say no to plastic bags” campaign. The aim is to promote the council’s new reusable shopping bag called “My Eco-bag” as an alternative to plastic shopping bags. The bag is made from jute which is a natural biodegradable product made under ethical conditions. Jute is environmentally friendly and when disposed off will decompose easily leaving behind valuable nutrients.
There are approximately 500 million plastic bags disposed off to landfill in Northern Ireland each year. This number could be significantly reduced if people reused their plastic bags or purchased a cloth bag.
“The Eco-bag offers an environmentally friendly alternative to shoppers within Limavady Borough. It should appeal to a wide demographic and will play a vital role in the reduction of plastic bags throughout the Borough”, says Liam McEvoy, ARENA Regional Development Executive with Limavady Borough Council.
The bags cost £1.50 each and can be purchased at Limavady Borough Council. They will also be available from other outlets throughout the Borough shortly. For further information on the Eco-bag please contact Technical Services on (028) 7776 0305.

They can be used time and time again to tranpsort your green garden waste from home to the council civic amenity site for disposal. They currently cost £1 per bag. Grass cutting’s, leaves, shrubs, tea bags, fruit and vegetable peelings and egg shells are just some examples of what can be put inside the composter. The time required to turn these materials into compost varies. However on average the process will take approximately twelve months.
