Birdwatching
Telephone: 028 9049 1547Limavady and the Roe Valley is a perfect location for birdwatching all year round with a variety of habitats to observe many different native and migratory birds. Prime locations worth visiting for ornithology are described below.
LOUGH FOYLE
A large, broad sea lough, Lough Foyle is an internationally important coastal site for wintering waders and wildfowl and accordingly is a Special Protected Area and Ramsar site. The eastern shore of Lough Foyle is the place to see large numbers of birds on the mudflats at high tide. The RSPB has a 3,300 acre reserve within the lough. From early autumn to early spring the population of the lough increases dramatically. October is the time to see Whooper swans and Brent geese as they arrive from their long journey from Iceland and beyond.
