Mountain & Upland

Whilst not the highest mountains in Irelandthe Borough has some easily recognisable peaks. From the cliff line overlooking Magilligan, the upland ridge rises and falls from Binevenagh in the north to Benbradagh in the south.

The Glenshane Pass provides one of the most scenic drives in Irelandas the Sperrins start gaining height. Much of the upland in the Borough is covered in blanket bog or commercial forestry.

One such bog is Altikeeragh encompassing the entire ASSI of Binevenagh, and which also holds National Nature Reserve designation. The Reserve is owned by Northern Ireland Environment Agency.

As stated on the Agency's website, "This relatively intact area of peatland is bound by extensive afforestation to the south and east and by cut-over bog to the north and west.

"The importance of this site relates to the peatland vegetation communities, and the typical structural features. These include blanket bog vegetation with some raised bog characteristics, a well developed pool system, flat bog plains and localized flushes and soaks." You can read more about Altikeeragh here.
