JANE ROSS & THE LONDONDERRY AIR

"Oh Danny Boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling"

Jane Ross heard The Londonderry Air, the haunting melody played by a blind fiddler on Market Day, recorded the notes and sent them to George Petrie, an English collector of Irish Music. Hence the once elusive melody became Danny Boy, one of the most popular songs of all time. Some say that the tune was originally composed as a lament for the O'Cahan Clan. Jimmy McCurry, the enigmatic figure who originally played the tune on his fiddle, is buried in Tamlaghtfinlagan Parish Church graveyard in an unmarked grave. Jane Ross was born in 1811 at 51 Main Street, Limavady, where a plaque commemorates her residence, and is buried in Christchurch graveyard. A sculpture has been erected on Catherine Street to recognise her significance within the Danny Boy Story.
