WILLIAM FERGUSON MASSEY,
PRIME MINISTER OF NEW ZEALAND 1912 - 1925
Born on the 26th March 1856 at Keenaght, near Limavady, William Ferguson Massey lived in Limavady until he was 14, when he emigrated to New Zealand to seek his fame and fortune. From a poor background, Massey worked his way up, beginning as a lowly ploughman and rising to the dizzy heights of Prime Minister in 1912. Massey visited Limavady twice during his life, once in 1914 and once in 1921 to a triumphant welcome. A plaque has been erected on Irish Green Street, where his family home was situated, and a full size bronze statue stands outside the Council Offices on Connell Street.
