Economic Development

Limavady Borough relies on small business. These are the backbone of our local economy. We welcome and encourage inward investment from outside Northern Ireland. However, our business strategy focuses on competitive improvements and economic growth for the smallest businesses in Limavady.

Textiles agriculture and locally-important industries, have suffered over the past few years from international pressures. It’s important that fledgling businesses in Limavady are supported in material ways that can help them face these challenges and grow their businesses.

The Council’s last economic development plan ran from 2000 – 2006, and a new plan will be put in place for 2007 – 2009.

Some successes to date include:

  • over 300 business starts over the past five years
  • investment of over £100,000 in local businesses to help them develop marketing, sales, finance etc and improve processes within their businesses.
  • Council’s Town Centre Management initiative in conjunction with traders and investors in the town has levered in around £300,000 from the Building Sustainable Prosperity Programme and the Department of Social Development
  • genuine increases in sales, turnover, profit and staff numbers from the “push” given through these programmes
  • the creation of twelve technology units totalling 5450 sqft; completed in early 2006, these units are already 50% full, well ahead of the target of 85% occupancy in year 3.

A new economic development strategy begins in 2007 and runs to 2009. It is available for download through this site.

Take part in our Business Database!

One of the new Council services within Economic Development is the Think Big Business Database. We hope to use this database to keep those who are on it, informed of new programmes, grants or services which are available. The database is stand-alone, not used for 3rd party marketing purposes, and remains private and confidential at all times. If you want to be a part of the Think Big Programme, please fill out the Think Big questionnaire which is in the "documents" section of this page, and email it to paul.beattie@limavady.gov.uk. If you're not in, you can't win!
