Who we are

The Environmental Health Department is responsible for the provison of a range of statutory and advisory services designed to protect and enhance public health and safety and to contribute to an overall improvement in environmental conditions and quality of life.

What we do

Environmental health licensing, trading and other forms available on the website.

Food Safety:Audits of relevant food business to secure compliance with standards of food hygiene and food compositional requirements including food sampling, the investigation of food complaints and the investigation of incidents of food poisoning and food borne illness. Relevant food businesses include retail and wholesale businesses, catering establishments including restaurants, hotels, quest houses, pubs and institutional premises and certain categories of food manufacturing and processing establishments. Food safety standards in other manufacturing and processing establishments including slaughterhouses and fresh meat processing plants is regulated by other Agencies through the Food Standards Agency www.food.gov.uk

 

Occupational Health and Safety: The monitoring and regulation of standards of workplace health and safety across a range of relevant work activities in order to secure compliance with occupational health and safety standards and reduce the likelihood of accidents and work related ill health affecting employees, the self employed and others who may be affected by work activities. Relevant work activities include offices, retail and wholesale businesses, restaurants and other catering services, leisure and recreational workplaces, the provision of residential accommodation and the practise of religious activities. Regulation of health and safety in workplaces such as factories, farms, construction sites, schools and council and Government departments is the responsibility of the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland www.hseni.gov.uk

Consumer Protection and Home Safety: The monitoring and regulation of the safety of a wide range of consumer goods including electrical goods, toys, furniture, construction products etc. in order to protect the public against risk of injury from unsafe goods manufactured, supplied or sold within the Borough. The Council, through the Environmental Health Department also supports the promotion of safety in the home through the work of the local home safety committee.

Environmental Protection: The Department enforces a range of environmental protection and public health legislation controlling activities such as:

  • Noise
  • Dust and odours
  • Air quality
  • Authorisation of prescribed industrial processes
  • General public health nuisances including insanitary and ruinous and dilapidated premises
  • Non-mains and swimming pool water quality

and provides consultative responses and advice to other Council and Government Departments and Agencies on matters such as property searches, planning consultations and proposed legislation

Licensing and Regulatory Services: The Department administers a range of other licensing and regulatory services including:

  • the provision of a dog control service(to collect stray and unwanted dogs),
  • the licensing of street trading, 
  • caravan site licensing
  • bye law prohibiting the consumption of alcohol in public places
  • bye laws regulating cosmetic piercing and semi permanent skin colouring

A substantial proportion of the Department's workload is based on the enforcement of public health and environmental protection legislation for which Council has a statutory responsibility. In addition the Department provides advice and information to a wide range of individuals and groups both informally and through formal consultation and training.
